    Kalshi in one sentence

Kalshi is a federally-regulated US prediction market where you trade Yes/No contracts on whether real-world events will happen — Will the Heat make the playoffs? Will named hurricanes hit Florida? Will the Fed cut rates in June? — at prices set by other traders, not by a house.

What makes Kalshi different from a sportsbook

    • Regulator: CFTC (federal commodities) instead of state gaming commissions.
    • Pricing: peer-to-peer order book — you trade against other users at market prices; published exchange fees may apply.
    • Markets: covers sports plus politics, weather, crypto, economics, culture — sportsbooks cover sports only.
    • Legality: available in all 50 states and DC because federal commodities law preempts state gambling code.

    How a Kalshi contract works

Each market has a Yes contract and a No contract. Both prices add up to roughly $1.00 (100 cents). Buy Yes at 35 cents and you risk 35 cents to win 65 cents if the event happens. Buy No at 65 cents and you risk 65 cents to win 35 cents if it doesn't. Settlement is automatic at $1 (the winning side) and $0 (the losing side).

    Who can use Kalshi

Verified US residents 21 and older in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. KYC takes about two minutes — driver's license or US passport, plus a US bank or debit card for funding.

    Is Kalshi safe and legit?

Yes. Kalshi is a CFTC-registered Designated Contract Market — the same federal classification as the CME. Customer funds are held in segregated accounts at FDIC-insured US banks. The platform has been operating since 2021 and processed billions in volume. See our full review for fee detail, withdrawal speeds, and our methodology.

What makes it different from a sportsbook

    • You trade against other users on an order book rather than against a house line.
    • Positions can be sold before the event resolves.
    • There is no limiting of consistently profitable accounts.
    • Profits are generally reported as trading income rather than gambling winnings.
    • Oversight comes from the CFTC rather than a state gaming regulator.

    What you can trade

Kalshi lists contracts across economics such as inflation and Fed decisions, weather including Atlantic hurricane counts, politics, and a broad sports slate. The weather and economics categories are where its coverage is deepest relative to other venues.

    Who can use it

US residents who complete identity verification. Availability by state can shift while sports-contract litigation proceeds, but Florida has taken no action against the exchange and residents can trade the full catalogue.
